Named for Lt Stephen J Wentworth of the 4th New Hampshire Infantry. He had enlisted from Somersworth, NH on 21 Aug 1861 as a private in Co E, was promoted first to sergeant, then to 2nd Lieut of Co K on 1 Dec 1863. Wounded at Cold Harbor on 6 June '64, and killed in action during the Battle of Deep Bottom, on 15 Aug 1864.
