New Durham, NH Civil War Soldier's Memorial
The Project
Charles W. Canney Camp #5 has begun* a project that will take us to towns around the state that do not currently have a Civil War monument. The Town of New Durham was selected as the first to receive this honor. The project consists of: raising money within that town, purchasing a memorial, and publicly dedicating the memorial. The monument is a slanted granite stone (fitting as New Hampshire is the Granite State).
New Durham, New Hampshire sent 139 men off to fight in the Civil War and now, 139 years after the end of the Civil War, those brave men and boys finally have their own Memorial. Members of the Camp met with the Board of Selectmen in March of 2003. On October 12, 2003 the goal of raising $1000 was achieved. The Camp ordered the memorial over the winter, and held a formal Dedication and Unveiling Ceremony in front of the Town Hall on May 15, 2004.
Charles W. Canney Camp #5 wishes to thank the people of New Durham who helped make this possible. In addition, Charles W. Canney Camp #5 particularly wishes to thank the New Durham Historical Society for their invaluable assistance with contributions and the setting up of events in town.
