New Hampshire's Last Civil War Veteran:

Joseph Wilkins

Military honors were paid here yesterday to Joseph Wilkins, who died at the age of 89. He was the last of Suncook's Civil War veterans.
Rev William E Ineson of the Methodist Church conducted the service. John J Maguire Post, A L, furnished bearers and a firing squad, and Percy Monty, a Boy Scout bugler, sounded "Taps" over the grave in the Pembroke street cemetery.
Joseph was born in Suncook on 24 May 1844, the son of Jeremiah H and Mary (Thompson) Wilkins. He was living in Illinois at the time of the Civil War, and enlisted with the 132nd Illinois Infantry (a 100-day regiment) on 11 May 1864, his residence listed as Sycamore, IL. He was mustered in on the 1st of June, and served five months, being mustered out on 17 Oct '64.
