New Hampshire's Last Civil War Veteran:
Pittsfield

Alonzo K Jones

Died 5 Apr 1939

   "Alonzo K Jones, 92, last surviving Civil War veteran in this town, died late last night. A native of Newfields, he came to Pittsfield in 1893 and was for many years an overseer in the Pittsfield mills. During the Civil War he served with the First Maine Volunteers." - obituary, Ports. Herald, 4/6/1939, pg 1

He was a resident of Portsmouth, NH when he enlisted on 18 Aug 1864 with Co A, 1st Maine Veteran Volunteers (formerly the 7th Maine Inf), a substitute for the credit of Bath, Maine. He served until his mustering out on 28 June 1865.

Alonzo was born on 3 May 1847 in Newfields, NH, the son of Paul and Nancy (Wooster) Jones. At the time of his death, he was a retired mill worker. He died from gangrene, which had infected his left leg 10 days prior to his passing. He was buried in Floral Park Cemetery, Pittsfield. He was a past commander of the Willard K Cobb GAR Post, No 29, of Pittsfield.
