George Washington Woods

George M (sic) Woods, 99, Laconia's last veteran of the Civil war, was accorded full military honors at funeral services held for him this morning at the Wilkinson funeral home, Laconia.
Mr Woods, who died at his home on 11 Bay street Friday night after a long illness, was a veteran of the peninsula campaign under Gen George B McClellan and was for a time the general's personal bodyguard.
George was born 2 Jan 1845 in Mason, NH [death rec; enl says Haverhill, NH]. He was a musician (fifer) in Co B, 17th US Infantry, enlisting at age 15 on 9 Dec 1861. He was discharged for disability on 26 Oct 1862 at Sharpsburg, MD (or 12 Dec 1862, according to 1890 Amesbury, MA Veteran Schedule]. It is noted in a write-up on the 17th reg't that "Companies B and D were detached and formed part of the provost guard at General McClellan's headquarters", which explains the sentence in his obituary. He reenlisted with Co A, 1st New Hampshire Heavy Artillery on 23 June 1863, age 18, was mustered in on 29 June, and served until 11 Sept 1865.
He was buried in Union Cemetery, Laconia.
