The camp was named after Dr A J H Buzzell, surgeon with the Third New Hampshire Volunteers. He had a doctor's practice in Dover, NH since 1855 and, when offered an assistant surgeon position with the 3rd NH, accepted it and left to join the regiment. In Nov 1862, he was promoted to Full Surgeon of the unit. In Feb 1865, while caring for sick prisoners from Fort Fisher, he himself came down with typho-malarial fever, and died at Wilmington, NC on 27 Mar 1865. His body was returned to Dover, NH for burial. The Secretary of War would posthumously appoint him a brevet Lieutenant Colonel rank.
