A charter for this post was received from the State Encampment on 16 Jan 1869. After a few years the charter was returned and the organization ceased to exist. On 1 Nov 1879, the present post was organized under a new charter with the same name and number.
This Post was named after Lancaster native Edward Ephraim Cross, Colonel of the 5th New Hampshire Infantry. He was mortally wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg, and died on 3 July 1863.
