About Our Camp
On July 21, 2001, Granite State Camp # 5, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, was chartered in Rochester, NH. On January 15,2003, Granite State Camp # 5 turned in its charter to the New Hampshire State Commander and signed their new charter of "Charles W. Canney, Camp # 5", reviving the name of Rochester's original Sons of Veterans Camp. The original Charles W. Canney Camp # 29, which was organized in 1887, was named after 19-year-old Charles William Canney, the son of Edward M. Canney, born in Tuftonboro, New Hampshire. Charles had lived in Rochester for two years with his family when he enlisted into Company D, 5th New Hampshire Regiment as a private on October 23, 1861. He was later promoted to sergeant and killed on June 3, 1864, at the battle of Cold Harbor, where he was then buried. The original camp was disbanded in 1914.
The goal of the Charles W. Canney Camp is to promote and preserve the memory of the Civil War Veteran and to pay honor to all those who fought to keep us free.
